 What will you be doing?

Our client is an institution that offers support in the field of education, training and therapy for children, adolescents and adults. All target groups have to deal with psychological, mental, intellectual or neurological limitations. Our client is located outside the city at a 45-minute drive, so it is important that you have a rental car or rent an accommodation in one of Cape Town’s suburbs.

Within the position of Social Worker you can be deployed to different target groups, this is determined in consultation with your preference. There is a children’s day care center where they take care of 30 children in 3 groups. The children receive educational and physical stimulation, and they also have access to physical and speech therapy. Their work center is a social workplace that gives 150 disabled (young) adults the opportunity to participate in the working world. Here, simple but challenging tasks are performed for which they also receive a (small) fee. There is an adult day care center where adults are cared for who cannot participate in their social workplace. Finally, there is residential care, these are six houses with a total of 60 residents, who are present during the day in the day care center or the social workplace.

As a Social Work intern you supervise and stimulate the target group you are on. You devise activities and support them in their implementation, you also guide your patients during (therapeutic) sessions.

What will you do?

Our client is an NGO based in one of the townships outside of Cape Town. They focus on skill development and education through three programs. The focus is on both children and adults, for example, they train young people in a chosen field such as barista, graphic design or hairdresser. In addition, there is a program where students receive help with their studies and where they are prepared for further studies or a job. Finally, they teach unemployed adults how to create their own vegetable garden for both their own use and sales.

Within this social work internship you have the choice to focus on the participants (children, young people and unemployed adults). Or the staff of the organization (mostly from the relevant township). Depending on the target group, you will mainly focus on preparing and giving presentations. You also support in training new staff and volunteers or, for example, conducting interviews. You support psychosocial therapy sessions for both participants and staff. You conduct conversations, report these and determine together with the Social Worker whether someone should be referred for long-term assistance.

Nursing internship

Our client is a housing facility for children and young adults with a physical or mental disability. They live here full time and the facility consists of 4 different departments with each department having around 15-25 residents. Because of their disability, this target group needs help with almost all facets of daily life such as showering, dressing, visiting the toilet, eating and activities. The housing facility stimulates contact with the home front and they are therefore always welcome to visit and they can also take the residents for an activity or, for example, a weekend away. Within this nursing internship in South Africa you will be involved in, among other things, assisting with showering, dressing and preparing the residents. You receive the transfer of the night shift where you set up the duties for the coming day, assist with the possible transfer of residents to a hospital or clinic and administrative tasks. You also support the residents in their daily activities and you guide them to their physiotherapy, for example. There is also room for research into various topics such as personnel training or communication.
